Oxalis species, also known as wood sorrel, lucky shamrock plant, and false shamrock are largely native to Africa and South America, though there are a number of species native to North America, including Montana. These plants have between three and ten clover-like leaves that fold closed at night. Many oxalis species make good houseplants due to their shade tolerance and ease of growing in containers, and are prized for their beautiful and interesting foliage and belief to bring good luck. Some varieties are tougher to grower error than others.
Oxalis triangularis "Mijke" is a brilliant variety that has little to no black edging on the maroon red to burgundy purple leaves, with small insignificant white bell-shaped flowers in the spring. This species grows best when allowed to go dormant for a short period of time during the winter.
