Striped Tradescantia zebrina Purple Variegated "Purplina" 3.5" potted
The name "Inch Plant" is commonly used for three distinct species of the Tradescantia or Spiderwort genus; T. zebrina, T. pallida, and T. fluminensis. They are also collectively known by the moniker "Wandering Jew" plants.
This listing is for the T. zebrina species of a stunning variegated deep purple variety "Purplina". The leaves have a distinctive top stripe pattern in shiny silver and deep dark green, with dark purple to magenta pink undersides, and a fabulous pearly metallic sheen. In the proper growth lights the tops of the leaves of this variety start to turn purple also. This plant is native to parts of Central and South America, is winter hardy in zones 8 and up, and makes a fantastic trailing plant in your houseplant collection. It can get over six feet long! It is used as a popping zany groundcover in warmer areas.
T. zebrina is an easy care houseplant, one that would be recommended for beginning gardeners. Tradescantia zebrina is fairly tolerant of over- and under-watering, can live in low light to bright indirect light, is largely impervious to insect pests, and tolerates transplanting and pruning very well. The mother plant will die off after a couple years, but is easily rejuvenated by propagation from cuttings. You can also bury a portion of the stem to root into a "new" plant. T. zebrina "Purplina" makes a lovely companion plant for begonias and parlor palms as they have similar needs and look fantastic together!
This is a plant difficulty Level 1 - Beginners, easy care and forgiving of most error.
The live plants in this listing are single plants in 3.5" nursery pots and have 4-10 inches of stem.
