Wandering Jew Spiderwort Tradescantia pallida Purple "Purple Queen" Well Rooted Cuttings Setcreasea
The plant name "Wandering Jew" is commonly used for three distinct species of the Tradescantia or Spiderwort genus; T. zebrina, T. pallida, and T. fluminensis. They are also collectively called Inch Plants.
This listing for "Purple Queen" is the T. pallida species of a stunning deep purple to maroon red variety, also known as "Purple Heart", Setcreasea purpura, or by its original scientific name Setcreasea pallida. The leaves are softly fuzzy, with a deep purple to maroon red coloration throughout. Due to the plant fuzz, this is one of my petting plants that can be good for sensory work. The flowers are small, purple, and fairly insignificant. This plant is native to parts of Central and South America, is winter hardy in zones 10+, and makes a fantastic trailing plant in your houseplant collection. It is used as a popping purple groundcover in warmer areas.
T. pallida is a very easy care houseplant, a bit less easy than T. zebrina, but one that I would recommend for beginning gardeners. Wandering Jew is fairly tolerant of over- and under-watering, can live in fairly low light to bright indirect light, is largely impervious to insect pests, and tolerates transplanting and pruning fairly well. This particular species will grow and live in low light, but does lose its deep purple coloring in light that is low. It is also a bit less tolerant of neglect than its variegated cousins. The mother plant will die off after a couple years, but is fairly easily rejuvenated by propagation from cuttings. "Purple Heart" is a lovely companion plant for begonias and other wandering jews, as they have similar growth requirements and look fantastic together!
Once rooted in soil, this plant is difficulty Level 1 - Beginners, easy care and forgiving of most error.
Due to some extra trickiness in soil rooting from water, this product is a difficulty Level 3 - Advanced, grows in most homes with no to minimal equipment and requires some knowledge.
