Tradescantia pallida Inch Plant "Purple Queen" 3.5" potted
The name "Inch Plant" is commonly used for three distinct species of the Tradescantia or Spiderwort genus; T. zebrina, T. pallida, and T. fluminensis. They are also collectively known by the moniker "Wandering Jew" plants.
This listing for "Purple Queen" is the T. pallida species of a stunning deep purple to maroon red variety, also known as "Purple Heart", Setcreasea purpura, or by its original scientific name Setcreasea pallida. The leaves are softly fuzzy, with a deep purple to maroon red coloration throughout. Due to the plant fuzz, this is one of our "petting plants" that can be good for sensory work. The flowers are small, purple, and fairly insignificant. This plant is native to parts of Central and South America, is winter hardy in zones 8 and up, and makes a fantastic trailing plant in your houseplant collection. It can get over six feet long! It is used as a popping purple groundcover in warmer areas.
T. pallida is an easy care houseplant, not quite as easy as T. fluminensis, but one that would be recommended for beginning gardeners. Tradescantia pallida is fairly tolerant of over- and under-watering, can live in low light to bright indirect light, is largely impervious to insect pests, and tolerates transplanting and pruning very well. The mother plant will die off after a couple years, but is easily rejuvenated by propagation from cuttings. You can also bury a portion of the stem to root into a "new" plant. T. pallida "Purple Queen" makes a lovely companion plant for begonias and oxalis as they have similar needs and look fantastic together!
This is a plant difficulty Level 1 - Beginners, easy care and forgiving of most error.
The live plants in this listing are single plants in 3.5" nursery pots and have 4-10 inches of stem.
